TOPPS Water Protection Project
TOPPS water protection is focused on intensive dissemination of Best Management Practices (BMPs) and the extension of TOPPS – BMPs to more countries. The project is aimed at farmers and advisers in 12 countries and started as a three year project 2015.
In various TOPPS projects a broad range of information, training materials and Best Management Practices (BMPs) recommendations to reduce Plant Protection Products losses (PPP) to water has been developed (point sources, spray drift and runoff). Key perspectives are the correct behavior of the operator, improved equipment and infrastructure. We operate in countries with local partners, which have previously been included in all TOPPS projects (ES, IT, FR, BE, DE, PL – so-called “core countries”) and with new partners in countries which have mainly been exposed to the TOPPS-life project so far (RO, HU, SK, GR, PT, NL – “extension countries”).
In the “extension countries” we will first develop the local versions of the diffuse source BMPs to reduce spray drift and runoff, the training materials and information packages. Point source materials will be updated and reprinted. After completion of these“ foundations“, focus will shift to dissemination activities, trainings and demonstrations. Especially practical demonstrations have proven efficient for supporting implementation.
In the course of the coming three years the project we will also complete certain remaining aspects of the BMPs, by addressing drainage and leaching.
