Remnants are diluted liquids contaminated with pesticides (Plant Protection Products - PPPs) which remain in pray tanks or on the farm, even after the careful rinsing and cleaning in the last treated field. Maintenance work on the sprayer (filter cleaning, nozzle change etc.) can also be a source of contamination, as it is not always practical for all relevant activities to be carried out in the field. The outside surfaces of many sprayers are still cleaned  on farmyard hard surfaces because the cleaning equipment is kept at the farm. Therefore washing water can be contaminated, and also needs to be considered as remnant liquid.

Remnants need to be collected or contained and either brought back to the field to be appropriately used/ disposed of, or be treated in a bio filter or other system. Recommendations on how to deal with remnants vary greatly across EU countries.
