The TOPPS –Life project concentrated to reduce losses of Plant Protection Products (PPP) to water. The project was funded by EU through the Life program and the ECPA (European Crop Protection Association). The project started November 2005 and ended October 2008. It was designed as a multi stakeholder project and included 15 EU member states, 12 local partners and 9 subcontractors, which executed the project.
What was done?

1. Status analysis
Review if and which recommendations to reduce point sources already existed in countries .
2. Development and proposal of Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce point sources
were developed in the project team. All relevant working processes were
analyzed and categorized according to the risk they may pose in practice.
3. Best Management Practices were presented and discussed by project partners and local stakeholders. Modifications proposed were considered in preparing the EU- stakeholder forum where the EU-core BMPs were presented and discussed with European stakeholders. This discussion process involved stakeholders from various disciplines (authorities, regulators, farm advice, crop protection experts, agriculture, water industry and others). The integration of a broad group of stakeholders achieved a broad acceptance and support for the proposed BMPs.
4. Based on the BMPs, training and dissemination materials were developed (BMPs booklet, TOPPS flyers for farmers, publications in the farm press, training courses, videos, picture gallery). Most materials are available in local languages.
5. Farm advisers and farmers were trained on Demo farms in order to create awareness for water protection and to support the implementation of measures to reduce the risk for point source pollutions.

TOPPS - extension project
Based on the TOPPS-Life project results, materials and dissemination activities were extended to more EU countries. BMPs were adapted to the local situation with the help of local partners. The TOPPS extension program was supported by ECPA and is still running.
