TOPPS Partners workshop 14 November 2018

TOPPS partners and stakeholders celebrated the thirteen's TOPPS anniversary in a stakeholder workshop on the 14th November 2018  in Brussels.

TOPPS started in November 2005 as a three year co-funded project between the EU-Commission’s Life Program and ECPA . First focus was to develop and disseminate Best Management Practices (BMPs)  to reduce Plant Protection Product (PPP) losses to water from point sources.

Up to now TOPPS project work was done in 23 European countries and the TOPPS - BMPs cover now all main entry routes of PPP into water.

WHAT WE DO

  • Develop Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce the risk of pesticies (PPPs - Plant Protection Products) entering water in Europe.
  • Develop information and tools for risk diagnosis and provide materials to be used for presentations and training courses to support dissemination of BMPs.
  • Dissemination of BMPs through trainings and demonstrations, workshops and presentations for farmers, advisers and stakeholders

HOW WE WORK

  • TOPPS – projects are multi-stakeholder projects (open for input and contributions from all stakeholders)
  • TOPPS – projects work together with local partner organisations in countries in which the project is active
  • TOPPS – project teams provide complementary skills ranging from science to farm advice

This approach helps ensure broad consensus on recommended measures (BMPs) by considering local aspects from the start, and delivers a range of risk reduction methodologies which can be used in a toolbox approach.

WHAT WE EXPECT TO ACHIEVE

  • Create increasing awareness of the need to protect water from PPP contamination, while simultaneously providing practical information on how it can be done
  • Inform operators and stakeholders about the correct use of PPPs and  how to improve equipment and infrastructure
  • Increase acceptance of the need to implement risk reduction measures
