TOPPS Charter for Stakeholders

The TOPPS charter was launched at the TOPPS EU Stakeholder Workshop held on 7th February 2007. Participants at the workshop were the first to be offered the opportunity to sign the charter.

This charter is aimed at allowing stakeholders to express their commitment to the general long term aims of the TOPPS project as they relate to improving water quality through education and training activities, as well as through better use of technology.

The TOPPS project aims at the development of an EU-wide accepted base line on:

· Common Best Management Practices (BMPs) for the safe use of Plant Protection Products (PPPs) and for dedicated
  stewardship activities for
sustainable risk mitigation of water contamination
· Generic skills and knowledge required for PPP use in order to build a Common Training Framework and Network
· Options/tools/practises and minimum technical specifications for hardware tools e.g. PPP-container rinsing tools, filling and
  cleaning places, sprayer
requirements
· A generic checklist/guidance on safe use of PPPs for specific target groups: e.g. farm managers, contractor sprayers and
  extension services

Furthermore, signatories to the present charter will represent a community of people and organisations which are actively involved in sustainable agriculture and assuring a high water quality and the protection of the environment.

Those organisations that sign this charter and send back a copy to the TOPPS secretariat will be registered as stakeholders on the TOPPS website, and they will receive executive summaries regarding the progress of the TOPPS project , its achievements and information related to relevant water quality issues. They will also be given access to an on-line library for experts in the field.

All stakeholders are welcome to put the charter which can be found on the following page in a visible place on their bulletin board or waiting hall to show their commitment to the goals of the project, and to promoting sustainable use of PPPs more generally.
